And so it happened. Back in December I was diagnosed with insulin resistance. What is it? Well, from my perspective it is something more complicated to explain than an endogenous depression. Or maybe I’m just more experienced in the topic of mental health? I mean, I’ve been into it for more that 2 years now… But let’s still try to define this thing.
So, insulin resistance, also referred as HOMA-IR, is all about insulin intolerance. In more serious words, it’s a decrease in the sensitivity of insulin-dependent cells to the action of insulin, followed by impaired glucose metabolism and its entry into cells.
Important features of insulin resistance? Uncontrollable appetite, weight gain, fatigue, headaches, depression and for women it can be connected with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Now that sounds more or less understandable, right? But you might have another question ‘Why the hell have I decided to share also this part of my life?’. Isn’t it enough for me just to talk about depression? No, it’s not. No, not this way…
First, it is a part of my life. Now it is. And it is an essential part, just like depression is, just like fashion is. I mean, you can never count on the fact that depression, especially endogenous one, will go away for good. The same with insulin resistance. You have to take care of yourself in both cases in order to stay on the safe side and not to get into serious troubles. So, somehow it all turns into a lifestyle.
Secondly, while studying through insulin resistance topic it came to me as a discovery that a lot of people around the world are in the same kind of boat. And again, there are some people who don’t even know that they have insulin resistance. They might be just living with the problems discussed above and thinking that it’s just their kind of feature to have excessive weight or uncontrollable appetite, etc.
So in this case, just like with depression, sharing is all about caring.
Let’s dive a little bit into my story. It was due to uncontrollable appetite and weight gain (like 20kg in less than 2 years) that made me turn to endocrinologist, who in turn, undertook some analysis to find the cause. That’s how we got to know about this other special feature of mine – insulin resistance.
P. S. The image used in the cover of this story is actually from the year 2017 and has nothing to do with insulin resistance case of the moment.
